Week 5

Lion Lamb

We often think of Jesus as the babe in the manger.  Occasionally, we think of Jesus as the teacher on a mountain.  But neither of these is the image used by John in the Revelation.  John instead focuses on Jesus’ role as the Lamb, the Lamb who sacrificed for us.  In Chapter 5 of the Revelation, Jesus is deemed worthy to open the scroll in God’s hand because Jesus died.

This death on the cross was no defeat.  Jesus’ death was victory.  By His death all death was swallowed up, all sin was defeated.  Jesus stood resurrected the mighty victor over both.  It is to this victorious Lamb that we give our worship.  We fall down at His feet and worship, because He won us back from sin and death.  The Lamb is our King, and I would not have another.

Day 1

He is Worthy

Read Revelation 5: 1-5

God gets down to business in heaven, but first some thing has to be understood.

  1. Where do they look for someone who is worthy to open the scroll?  Do they find anyone in the search?  Do you know people who continue to search the universe for someone or something to make their lives meaningful?  Will they succeed?
  2. Who was worthy to open the scroll?  Why was He worthy?  Remind yourself what was His triumph was.

Day 2

The Slain Lamb

Read Revelation 5: 6-7

We see Jesus in Heaven.

  1. What title describes Jesus here?  Why was He slain?  (If you need help with the last one, grab a mirror.)
  2. Where was Jesus found?  Where had God been sitting?  How can Jesus be at the center of the throne on which God is sitting?  (Hint:  The answer is in the concept of the Trinity.)

Day 3

He is Our Lamb

Read I Peter 1:18-21

Peter reminds us of what Jesus’ mission on earth was.

  1. What were we redeemed from?  Think about the empty life God redeemed you from.  Thank God for purchasing you back from that life.
  2. What did God purchase you with?  To what have we been purchased?

Day 4

Worship the Lamb

Read Revelation 5:8-10

The 24 elders in Heaven Worship the Lamb.

  1. What happened when Jesus took hold of the Scroll?  List the ways in which the elders worship Jesus.
  2. The song contains reasons for worshiping Jesus.  List them.

Day 5

Songs of Praise

Read Revelation 5:9-13

This passage contains 3 songs of praise to the Lord.

  1. List the common themes in the three songs.  List their differences.
  2. Does all worship have to be the same?  What has to be the same?

Day 6

Every Knee Shall Bow

Read Philippians 2:9-11

This passage reminds us of what shall happen at the end of time.

  1. Why will every knee bow to Jesus?  Who exalted Jesus first?
  2. Will bowing to Jesus be pleasant for everyone?  Who will it be unpleasant for?  Who will enjoy confessing Jesus as Lord?

Day 7

Fall Down and Worship

Read Revelation 5:8,14

In these verses, the elders fall down and worship Jesus.

  1. Why do the elders fall down to worship Jesus?  What does posture have to do with worship?
  2. List the postures you take in worship.  Why do you worship in these positions?  Does your posture affect how you are thinking or feeling in worship?
